With more than 25,000 Heart Foundation Walking participants throughout Australia, the Awards recognised individuals in three separate categories: Local Coordinator, Walk Organiser and Walker.
Heart Foundation Chief Medical Advisor Garry Jennings said making the decision to participate in Heart Foundation Walking groups was the first step in becoming more active, but that the winners had taken further steps to assist members improve their health through walking.
"The Golden Shoe Awards are a great way to recognise and congratulate individuals who have shown support and dedication to members of their community and taken extra steps to assist in optimising health through walking," Prof Jennings said.
Golden Shoe Victorian winners:
Local Coordinator: Angela Greenall – Health Promotion Officer West Gippsland Healthcare Group.
Angela states that walking groups are a fabulous way to get active and socialise at the same time, with no cost involved. There is no expensive equipment required and it is a great way to get to know others in the community.
"Our walkers love to walk, talk and finish with a cuppa. It was a lovely surprise being nominated for the golden shoe award by our local walkers," said Angela.
Australian and Victorian Walk Organiser: Lynn Solohub
For the past four years, Lynn heads up a walking group of 14 regular walkers in Yarragon. There are two weekly walks; a flat town circuit and a longer 5 km walk. Lynn feels this caters for the needs of her walkers and they end up at a local café to conclude the walk.
"Our friendly, enthusiastic group walks all year in all types of weather. We find that walking provides great social interaction while having the added benefit of improving fitness and health", said Lynn.
A number of times each year, the group takes part in Heart Foundation Park Walks held at different locations throughout the State.
Golden Shoe Awards were recognised and awarded at State and National level.
