PLANNING STARTS FOR UPGRADE OF WONTHAGGI HOSPITAL

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and Bass Coast Health (BCH) recently appointed Lyons Architects to undertake a Master Plan and Feasibility Study for the future development of the Wonthaggi Hospital site. This follows the appointment of Altus Page Kirkland as the Quantity Surveyors and the appointment of Waterman AHW as the Service/ESD Engineers for the project.

The master planning process will identify what infrastructure and capital will be needed to deliver the services detailed in BCH’s recently completed Clinical Services Plan.

This exciting piece of work brings BCH one step closer to finally addressing the ageing infrastructure of Wonthaggi Hospital and the access issues specific to the site.

The master planning will run from November through to February next year, with recommendations for the redevelopment of the Wonthaggi Hospital due around mid-next year.

According to CEO Jan Child, “This is the next step in BCH’s journey as a sub-regional health service.  We are growing our services, and treating more patients, and this work will provide plans that enable our hospital to deliver its care from a contemporary health care environment”.

BCH Board Chair Don Paproth also applauded the energy of the many BCH staff who are engaged in the process, the contribution of community members, and the expertise of the architects, expert planners and engineers who were working behind the scenes to progress this work so thoroughly. Don was also quick to point out that, “the extraordinary support shown by the Department of Health and Human Services in funding and driving this important work is a key success factor”.

Board Directors, staff and community representatives have thus far held two workshops as part of this master planning process, with the next workshop scheduled in February.
