Director of Emergency Medicine – Permanent-Full Time


Bass Coast Health is inviting applications from suitably qualified Emergency Physicians to apply for the above full-time position at Bass Coast Health. The position will be located at Wonthaggi Hospital within the Emergency Department which is accredited with ACEM for 6 months of advanced training; linked with Monash Health.


The Director will lead the ED Senior Medical Staff (3.5 EFT) of FACEMs and Senior Medical Officers; and oversee the training of four Registrars and Junior Medical Officers (12 EFT)


Successful applicants will provide clinical leadership of medical services to all medical officers within the facility in the Emergency Department through overseeing the delivery of high quality and efficient patient care, ensuring an outstanding teaching environment and maintaining a positive patient experience.


The township of Wonthaggi is located in the picturesque shire of Bass Coast, home to beautiful beaches, rolling hills that house fine wineries and gourmet foods.


Bass Coast Health is the major public healthcare provider within the Bass Coast Shire which includes Phillip Island. The service has provided quality service and care for residents of the Bass Coast Shire for over 100 years. It is an integrated Health Service providing Emergency services as well as Acute Medical and Surgical, Sub-acute and Residential inpatient beds along with an extensive array of Community and Primary care services. Services are provided also from a number of other sites including Wonthaggi, San Remo and Cowes

The objectives of this role include:

  • Provide medical and administrative leadership within the Emergency Department (in collaboration with the ED Nurse Unit Manager) to ensure efficient and best-practice patient outcomes within allocated manpower and budgetary resources.
  • Assumption of overall responsibility for the supervision and regular evaluations of ED based medical students, interns HMOs and emergency registrars maintaining written records for BCH, external hospitals and or AHPRA as required.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical staff across the health service, particularly members of the nursing staff, VMO GPs as well as with outside agencies that interface with the health service
  • As a credentialled clinician in your own right, co-operate with the hospital’s performance appraisal process.
  • Conduct regular performance appraisals of all appointed senior medical officers working at the BCH ED
  • Direct supervision of medical students, junior hospital medical officers and registrars within the ED as well as limited oversight of same for Inpatient Units.
  • Provide medical services to ED patients and in-patients of BCH as credentialled, including participation in limited after-hours service provision.
  • Provide input (as a Senior Medical Staff member of Bass Coast Health) on relevant Committees and into overall planning and operations of the Health Service.
  • Provide information and advice on the operation of emergency medical services to the Director of Medical Services and Chief Executive Officer
  • Assist with the development of evidence-based policies and procedures for the ED and Inpatient Units in clinical collaboration with Visiting Medical Officers of the Health Service
  • Promote and participate in ED clinical audit, accreditation and quality activities as well as other benchmarking KPI activities as requested by BCH, DHHS or ACHS.
  • Advise the DMS on any matters that have potential medico-legal consequence
